Topic: 39  San Diego Schools sit in the traffigc pollution danger zone
Author: Joel Huffmann
Date: October 10, 2013

Picture
"39 schools lie within 500 feet of smog-filled traffic corridors, a distance that air-pollution researchers believe significantly increases the risk of pediatric asthma and other respiratory illnesses." There is to much traffic by 39 schools which cars make CO2 and the air is nearby schools which is dangerous. The law itself as been limited by a weak environmental regulations that put the enforcement burden on the backs of private citizens. In 2009, the environment Health tracking program found more than 5,200 San Diego county children under age 18 visited the emergency room for asthma treatment and 850 were hospitalized. Children lungs and immmune sytstems are not fully developed since they tend to spend more time outdoors than adults.

I chose this article since the freeways are near my school and also the place i live in. I saw this on the news article on how it is affecting the ecosystem and how cars use to much CO2 that could affect children. Children spend about a third of their day at school, often the hours of haviest traffic. This surprised me on how people don't notice that traffic and driving cars make a lot of pollution and the air spreads out and goes nearby schools. Hopefully one day all cars are electricity where you could just charge them without using any chemicals or oil.
